LA TANNERIE (DAR DBAGH)

The empire of the senses. The smell tickles the nostrils, the colors excite the pupils and the
finished material marries the skin. In the tannery of Chouara in Fez, they are more than 500
master craftsmen to work every day in the 1200 basins.
In Chouara, the materials worked are the same as in the twelfth century. "We are tanning the
skins of sheep, cow, goat and camel," says Oudrhiri El Ralli. Tanning techniques, too, have not
changed in a thousand years.
